Rat de cave, or cellar rat, candlesticks were used to light French Burgandy wine cellars from the 18th to 20th Centuries. The rat tail like handles are designed to be hung on the rim of a wine barrel

These functional and decorative pieces date to the early 20th century and feature a sliding lifter to control the height of the candle.
