A charming pair of early 19th Century French Directoire fauteuils retaining their elegant Neo-Classical form.
The beechwood frames feature carved laurel decoration, scrolling open arms with rosette terminals, and turned tapering legs. The chairs are upholstered in decorative needlepoint depicting repeating bee and laurel motifs, inspired by the decorative vocabulary of the French Empire period. The warm tones of the upholstery complement the mellow patina of the timber, creating a highly decorative and versatile pair. Circa 1800.
Good decorative condition with wear commensurate with age and use. The needlepoint upholstery is generally well presented, with a small historic repair to the needlepoint on one back panel. Minor marks and wear and historic restoration to the frames consistent with age and use.
