Pair of late 19th Century or early 20th Century French marine silver plated candlesticks. 


Made by the renowned French silversmiths, Christofle for the prestigious French shipping and cruise ship company, Compagnie des Messageries Maritime. These charming little candle holders are beautifully decorated with engraved bulrushes around the stem and to the top, floral and foliate motifs. The Coat of Arms of the shipping company with laurel wreath to each side is engraved to the base. 


It features a crowned unicorn head in rampart wall on a marine anchor. A symbol of power, the unicorn, considered an auspicious animal, is the emblem of the ships of the Compagnie des Messageries Maritime [1851-1977].

 

Beautifully worn silver plate on brass.
