Pair of 19th century elm benches from the late Qing Period. Shanxi Province. 

Lovely worn lacquered patina. Each bench features a lovely carved motif.

These charming stools or spring benches, (or Chung Dengs), hinting that the seat could be shared by lovers. They were typically placed to the exterior of shops outside the door. Pairs were often placed opposite each other in gateways and acquired the name 'gate benches'.
