A richly textured 20th Century French oil on panel painting, of a Provençal landscape by the noted French painter Gustave Vidal (1895–1966).

Depicting a shepherd guiding his flock through a rocky rural setting beneath the warm light of Southern France. Executed in oil on panel and worked heavily with a palette knife, the composition demonstrates

Vidal’s celebrated impasto technique, where paint is sculpted almost architecturally across the surface. The scene is quintessentially Provençal: weathered stone ruins, olive trees in blossom, rolling hills and grazing sheep rendered in earthy ochres, greens and chalky whites. Vidal’s mastery lies not only in colour and atmosphere, but in the extraordinary physicality of the paint itself, creating a vibrant, near three-dimensional surface. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, Vidal exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and gained recognition both in France and internationally, including exhibitions in Berlin and Brussels. Today his works are held in various collections and museums, notably the Musée des Santons in Les Baux-de-Provence.
