A lively mid-20th Century French oil on canvas painting of a village street scene.

Rendered with confident palette-knife strokes and a restrained Impressionist palette. Bellan captures the quiet charm of a provincial town: terracotta roofs, shopfronts and figures moving through the street under a soft grey sky. The expressive impasto and subtle tonal contrasts create both depth and movement, characteristic of the artist’s painterly style.

Étienne Bellan (b. 1922 – d. 2000) was a French painter known for atmospheric depictions of village streets, harbours and landscapes across France. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive textured technique using a palette knife, producing scenes that evoke the rhythm and everyday life of Mid-Century French towns. Bellan’s work was exhibited and sold widely in France during the second half of the 20th Century and continues to appear in European galleries and auctions, valued for its decorative appeal and authentic Paris-school aesthetic.
