A charming late 18th Century French walnut games table, retaining an unusual octagonal top inset with a decorative needlework gaming panel.

The tapestry depicts playing card motifs surrounding a central armorial-style reserve and is framed by a beautifully worn velvet border, lending the piece a wonderfully mellow decorative quality. Raised on turned walnut legs united by a shaped X-form stretcher with central finial, the table also retains its original single frieze drawer. Rich colour and patina throughout the walnut combine with the faded tapestry and velvet surround to create a piece of considerable character and visual appeal.

Both practical and decorative, this elegant provincial French table would work equally well as a side table, lamp table or occasional table. Circa 1780–1800.
