Jules Chéret [b.1836 - d.1932] was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of Belle Époque poster art. He has been called the father of the modern poster.

Between 1893 and 1900, Cheret designed seven posters for the Palais de Glace, an ice-skating rink located on the Champs-Elysees. Here, the elongated format which he used for three of the designs, allowed him to more fully render the gracefully-controlled movement of his central figure.
