A striking 19th Century Swedish Folk Art carved wooden horse.

Likely originating from the province of Hälsingland, a region celebrated for its rich decorative painting and rural craft traditions. Hand-carved from solid wood, the horse presents a beautifully naïve and expressive form characteristic of Scandinavian allmoge folk carving. The elongated body, simplified legs, and stylized mane reflect the honest, direct carving traditions of rural artisans. Traces of original polychrome decoration remain visible, including blue pigment to the mane, tail, and body, now softened by time into a wonderfully atmospheric surface.

The sculpture displays an exceptional aged patina, with areas of paint loss, surface cracking, and oxidation revealing historic paint layers accumulated through decades of life and handling. A visible construction seam along the torso with early nails reflects traditional hand assembly techniques. Today the horse reads as a powerful sculptural object, embodying the charm and authenticity of 19th Century Scandinavian rural craftsmanship. Pieces such as this are increasingly sought after by collectors and designers for their primitive elegance and strong decorative presence.
