Large, late 17th to early 18th century century French Biot jar stamped with eight makers marks.

Eponymous Biot pots date back to the 16th century,

'Jarres de Biot' were used to preserve olives or store flour. This very rare example has a fine crack to the upper area and is charmingly and simply repaired with an old wire around the rim. It was discovered in an old garden in Provence where it had been used as a planter for many years, hence a small drainage hole just above the base.

A charming, honest and decorative piece that exudes atmosphere and beauty from a bygone age.
