A large and wonderfully decorative late 19th Century French folk pottery jug, finished in a warm chestnut-brown glaze with cream slip decoration throughout.

The baluster-shaped body is hand-painted with a stylised Gallic rooster amongst floral and foliate motifs, a traditional symbol associated with French provincial craftsmanship and rural life. Featuring a pouring lip and loop handle, this rustic earthenware vessel combines sculptural form with charming naïve decoration and beautifully preserved surface character. An impressive decorative piece with excellent scale, ideal for a country house, farmhouse or traditional interior.
