A charming early 20th Century watercolour depicting an atmospheric Italian lakeside scene, traditionally identified as Stresa in the Italian Lakes.

Executed in delicate transparent washes, the composition captures moored boats, elegant waterfront architecture and distant mountain scenery in the softly romantic manner associated with Frank Catano, who frequently signed works for the English market as 'E. St. John'.

Italian-born and active in Britain during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, Catano became known for refined Mediterranean and Continental views, distinguished by their decorative appeal and tranquil mood. His works remain highly sought after for their light-filled palette and picturesque subject matter. Signed lower left “E. St. John”. Presented in a decorative gilt frame behind glass.
