A charming and evocative 20th Century French watercolour and ink study depicting a pair of elephants from the celebrated French 'Circus Pinder'.

Inscribed upper left “Pinder 22 Août 49”, the work was evidently executed from observation and captures the distinctive character and movement of the animals with confident brushwork and expressive line. The restrained palette and spontaneous draughtsmanship lend the piece the immediacy of a sketchbook study, whilst the precise dating offers a fascinating glimpse into post-war French circus life.

Presented in a later glazed frame. Watercolour and ink on paper. Inscribed and dated upper left “Pinder 22 Août 49”. Signed lower right by the artist, Ricard
